Students
Ireland Library Policies and Procedures
Expectations
-
Be quiet and considerate. When the librarian, Mrs. Gossett, or any other adult is talking, students need to be listening.
-
Rule for talking in the library are:
-
No talking during check in/out day, silent reading, lessons and stories.
-
A normal to low voice during class discussions and during activities which require working with others.
-
Absolutely no interrupting the Library Media Specialist if she is helping another student/teacher or taking a phone call - unless it is an emergency.
-
Students are expected to be respectful of other people and materials, responsible and resourceful in the Library Media Center.
-
Any student who consistently abuses these rules may lose his/her privilege to use the Library Media Center for a period of time determined by Mrs. Gossett.
Checkout
-
Students may check out up to 1-3 books (depending on grade level). If we find that a student is reading and AR testing over their allowed books (of their reading level) before their next library class time, they may begin checking out one extra book.
-
Books may be kept for two weeks. If the student wishes to keep an item longer, it must be brought back to the library for renewal. Overdue notices may be sent if books are kept beyond the due date.
-
At the beginning of the month notices will be given to students who have books that are more than two weeks overdue. Overdue fines will not be collected.
-
Check out privileges will be limited or stopped if students do not return materials.
Book Care
Students are responsible for the books checked out to them until they are checked back in at the library. We ask that you please reinforce the following rules at home.
-
Keep books in a safe place away from pets and small children.
-
Keep books dry by keeping them away from food and drinks. Please do not let your students carry water bottles in their backpacks with books!
-
Turn book pages carefully. Do not bend or fold (dog-ear) pages instead of using a bookmark.
-
Return books to the library on time, so that you may check out different books.
-
If a book is damaged, return it to the library for mending. Please do not try to repair the book at home.
Unfortunately, even when we make our best efforts to take care of materials, things are sometimes damaged. If an item is damaged, please let us know. We will attempt to repair the book. If it cannot be repaired, you will need to send in the money for a replacement copy.
Lost and Overdue Books
When an overdue book notice comes home with your child, try to find the book instead of paying for it.
No late/overdue fines are charged for overdue books. However, check out privileges will be limited or stopped if students do not return books. If you have questions about an overdue/lost book, please contact the Library Media Specialist so that checkout privileges may be restored as soon as possible.
If your child says the book has been turned in, this is possible. Sometimes the book does not register properly on the computer and may be placed back on the shelf without being checked in. Books also get put in the wrong place from time to time. However, if more than 2 months have passed and the book has not turned up, it is likely that it is not here. After this 2 month period, students will not be allowed to check out new books until the lost one is paid for or returned. (Books cannot be checked out to another student without the name of the previous student being taken off the book. Also, parents may send a book back to school with a child, but that does not mean it actually made it to the Library Media Center.) If students continue to not bring in overdue books or payments, further measures may be taken.
Damaged and lost books do need to be replaced in order to maintain our collection. DO NOT PURCHASE A NEW BOOK TO REPLACE THE LOST OR DAMAGED. Many times our copies have library bindings. We want to be able to replace the lost or damaged book with the same quality of book. The replacement cost needs to be paid so that the same or comparable item may be purchased. The dollar amount listed on the overdue/lost notice covers the book itself and not the additional costs of shipping, labeling, etc.
Please try to be understanding. This is a very busy place and there are a lot of student helpers. Sometimes books are found (here or at home) that have been lost and paid for. When that is the case, payments will be refunded when the book is returned (if a replacement has not yet been purchased).
